Caught Off Guard

Emotions are fickle, especially during times of stress. Going through a divorce during the holidays is like adding enormous weight to an already heavy load. Because of this, you should be prepared to become emotional at some very inopportune times. If this happens at work or while with friends, simply excuse yourself and walk away until you have regained your composure. Don’t feel obligated to stay somewhere if it becomes too difficult for you.

When you do feel a sense of emotional anxiety, the Bible provides a plan to help. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

When anxiety comes, pray. Take time to tell God what you need, how you feel (be honest with him and yourself), and then tell him the things for which you are thankful. The Bible says that when you turn to him in faith like this, he will give you the peace you need to handle the situations at hand. It won’t change your circumstances or take away all the pain. However, it will begin to change you on the inside into the person God wants you to be. Over time, you will see great results from your prayers.
